Its a dog's life!

Well we did have a few cooler days, but now its hot hot hot again.  The only thing to do on days like this is to find somewhere to flake out.  The small settee is one of my favourite places when the curtains are drawn to keep the sun out.

Go point that camera at someone else, I'm busy snoozing.  Actually, I can snooze all day, but I make up for it, I keep them coming up and down stairs all night.  Wee!  Drink of water.  Wee !  another drink of water and maybe a bit of grub.  Poo. Snooze.  Wee again, Mum, snooze.  Oh I can keep it up all night.  Mum reckons I am the cause of the black circles under her eyes. When Mum finally flakes out and hands over to Dad I get my trip into the garden, but that is it, game over.  Dad dont play that game.

Never mind, by the time Dad takes over I have had a few trips into the garden, at least three drinks of water, and possibly another couple of bowls of grub.  Good game.

Well, dont just stand there Dad, make yourself useful, tickle my tummy!  The folks reckon I have the most tickled tummy in the universe.

We wait until its cooler before we go out for a walk, but I am still heading at full speed for my hole in the hedge.  Its a shortcut to the next field where my main objective is ... the splash.

Over in the field across the river they have harvested the crop the old fashioned way, and have pitched onto the trailer.  It will go to the old mill to be ground into flour, and then baked into bread which they sell on days the mill is open to the public.  All done as it was in the past.

Dad thinks this is interesting.  There is no accounting for humans.

Now THIS is interesting.  They went out shopping.  The meanies put all the rubbish bins up on worktops where I couldn't get to them to investigate.  So I had to look elsewhere for entertainment.  I found it in the dining room.  Dad had put a couple of bags of barbeque charcoal under the table.  That bag just sort-of fell open in my mouth, so I had a bit of a dig around.  It went a long way.  Unfortunately they came home before I got to the second bag.

Barbeque night again tonight Dad?  I love helping Dad with the barbeque.  I've found the charcoal for you, so no excuses!

Its never boring - even when its hot!

Its been so bloomin' hot that none of us have wanted to do very much.  Its been a good time to catch up on my essential beauty sleep.  Mum's got a good trick for hot days, she splashes a few ice cubes into my water bowl and I do a bit of cube-catching ...  I chase them around the bowl with my nose until I can grab one and crunch it up.  Like that trick.

When we go for a walk the only thing to do is head straight for the splash.  I can spend ages just messing about in the river.

I was just poking around and I found something interesting.  It took a fair amount of poking and scraping, but I got it up.  Hey, its my half-a-ball!

I happily played tossing-it-over-my-shoulder and then digging it up again for a while until my mates arrived.

Patrick is a Setter and he is usually up for a bit of a chase, but this time they had Grandma with them ...
..and like all good Grandma's she has an almost- never-ending supply of treats.

You have never seen such well-behaved dogs.  Sitting nicely in front of her.  Mind you, we had a bit of an ulterior motive - Grandmas was going nowhere.  She wasn't getting past us until that treats bag was empty - and we had each investigated it thoroughly to make sure!

You can come again, Grandma, any time.

On the way back to the car we saw a huge column of black smoke coming from the farm buildings.  Then we heard that whoo-whoo-whip-whip-whoo sound, coming near and nearer.

It was large red-and-yellow truck with ladders on top.  The first one had hardly got its hoses sorted out when a second one arrived.

The old barn was well on fire, and the trees behind it were burning too, but the Firemen had large size hoses and put lots of water on it.  When the roof of the barn collapsed lots of sparks few up .. it was a bit like fireworks night only not so noisy.

We watched from across the road with the rest of the spectators - dont know where they all came from, unless the Fire Engine brought them along for the ride ....

Mum went shopping and came home with a new toy for me.  I just love new toys.  This one has a very satisfactory squeek ... I can almost play tunes with it.

After a while Dad disappears up to his computer and puts his headphones on.  Cant think why.

This is my very biggest I'm-a-happy-puppy smile.

Mucking about in the River

Well, here we are again.  Another good time in the Splash.  I can do this for an hour or more, no problem.
I'm here, I'm waiting ... where are you all ...

Mum doesn't mind, she sits on the log bench and rests her ankle.  I like it because sooner or later all the gang arrives to play ... and I meet new friends just about every time.  Every dog around finds its way down to the Splash.  The water is crystal clear and the bottom is sandy with little stones, so dogs who have been in other parts of the river and got their paws muddy on the way out up the bank, are brought here to wash off.

hello. nice to meet you.  gosh your eyes are blue.

Hello, haven't seen you before.  Oh, you're just back from your holidays.

Gosh you're eyes are blue.  Just like the sky. .. oh I see, that is why they named you Sky - stands to reason I suppose.  You are the first dog I have met with eyes so blue.  Right, its because you are a Husky, okay, so Husky's have blue eyes, I didn't know that.

One of the Mum's throws half a ball into the splash and everyone dashes in after it.  ...  but it sinks to the bottom and the rest give up when they dont find I floating .....

not me ....

I've found it, its here.  Maybe I can dig it up ....

Not giving up ....I know I can get it ... but dont want to put my nose under to grab it ...

but I will if I have to ... because its not going to beat me .. I'm a Pointer, I dont give up ... EVER!

..and I got it!  ... but once I got it out of the water I didn't want it any more because something much better to play with had turned up ...

                         Rosie  !!

Rosie is a Spaniel.  Short legs but goes like a rocket .. and runs on Duracell batteries .

Another thing about Spaniels - they have wonderful noses.  They also like to get those noses into everything ....

Oooooooh ..... what have you found Rosie??

Move over, I want to smell too!  Rosie is a good mate, she doesn't mind me sharing her smells!

Every now and again something out of the ordinary turns up ....

Yeaaah, Mum, I've found a Yeti!

The Heavyweights join in.

Say hello to a couple of friends, Echo and Whisper.

They are Siberian Mastiffs.  Big and very hairy.  Echo is the largest because Whisper is just a pup.  Whisper will run and play, but Echo is too busy pushing my Mum about to get a fuss.

When they are wet they are VERY wet.

This is us all meeting up.  I always know who is good for a fuss ... and who is the best bet for mugging. Echo and Whisper have only recently joined the gang, although they have been coming over here for ages.

The other dogs, well their Mum's really, were a bit worried about them becaue they are so big and Whisper is liable to jump all over them.  Mum' s are liable to be nervous, you know.

But I soon showed them all that both Echo and Whisper are great, cos I play with them and introduced them to the rest of the squad. They will be part of the gang now that all the Mum's know them better.

This is me having a quiet word with the lads.

Come on, gang, follow me.  I know who has a good treats bag and is most likely to be good for a handout or six ...

Follow the Leader .... with me in front, of course.

.... and it worked, of course, it worked ...who could resist my big amber eyes and pitiful expression .... and once the bag was opened the rest of the lads cashed in ....

As a newcomer, and still a pup, Whisper has a lot to learn.  I am a good teacher, and up to all the tricks.

... one thing else, though, Whisper is always good for a girl to girl gossip .....

Family fun.

Its a lovely sunny morning with an added bonus - its windy.  I love the wind, it flaps my ears and its exciting.  Wind brings smells and sets me off racing in all directions trying to track their sources.  Dad says I have the wind up my tail, but that's not true, I have the wind up my nose!

When we got over the meadows we made our way to the Splash as normal - its where I meet old friends, and make new ones.

Meet Ruger and his family.  They have been here some time.  Ruger is soaking wet from nose to tail and his family children are making sand-and-mud castles at the waterside.

Ruger is just one overgrown puppy and loves to play chase.  I'm game for that, especially if it means in and out of the water.  Mind out kids, fast wet dogs coming through.
..... slow wet kids left behind!

See the littlest kid, filling his bucket with water, next minute he toddles up and empties his bucket all over me!!

Score one each.  I wasn't fussed through, I was already wet, and besides I like being wet on a nice day.

New game - follow the leader.  This is great, this is different.  I like kids to play with, they are fun.

Mum is calling to go home.  Hang on, I want to bring my new stick ........

Callie meets the Wildlife.

It was a busy morning over the meadows.  Everyone seemed to be there.  Probably it was the bit of sunshine which brought them out.  Its been raining so much, and everything get soggy, but a nice bit of warm sunshine and everything changes.

See that Border Collie in front, with its eyes on my Mum, I have to watch that one.  Its sussed out that my Mum has really tasty treats in her bag and it keep begging them from her.  Its NOT ON.  Those tidbits are MINE.  Keep your distance Border Collie!

On the way to the splash, I found this thingie.  I was really curious, and gave it a little poke with my nose. Cheeky thing hissed at me and rolled up in a ball! .... and to add insult to injury when I gave it a little poke, gently mind, cos its so small, I got my nose prickled!

I was quite puzzled as to what it was.

Then I realised what it is - its the Wildlife!  Must say it seems a bit silly that the man was leaving the long grass for the Wildlife when the Wildlife is so tiny.  Mind you, not complaining, that long grass is magic for bouncing - and hiding from Mum :))

This is me waylaying Mum.  I have just raced back at top speed, and screeched to a half in front of her - she was getting a bit worried that I was going to go straight over her ! (silly Mum!), but I have good brakes .  I sit right in front of her feet and give her this big grin.  I'm not moving until she has given me a treat.  If she tries to go to one side I just shift over a bit so I am still sitting right in front.  Mum calls me a Mugger, but I get my treat!

Making hay and chasing play.

I've been down the fields with Dad for the past few days, so when Mum took me over the meadows I had quite a shock.  There was this machine and it was cutting all the lovely long grass.  I like that long grass, its where I do my best bouncing, so I was a bit miffed.

It was going up and down the field dragging a big cutting machine behind it.  When it came down near us I gave the driver my best "I am NOT amused look".

It must have worked because he only cut half the field, leaving the other half for 'the wildlife'.  I reckon that means me, cos I like going wild in the long grass.

Met up with a couple of mates and we went sniffing around a bit, had a good paddle in the river and got our legs really covered in mud.  Mum reckoned it was time to take me along to the splash so I could wash off all mud.  The splash has a nice sandy bottom, and lots of dogs go there to play.  There is even a log bench for Mum to sit on while I do my thing.

Dora was already there.  She is a Spaniel, and like all Spaniels completely bonkers.  She has a one-track mind and lives to run after the ball or stick her Mum throws for her.  Its a bit difficult to get her to play Chase Callie .... but I found the way ...

... I got there first and nicked her stick! .....  it wasn't difficult because my legs are much longer than her little stumpy Spaniel legs and I go faster ....... and I ran off with it.

Right across the splash into the reeds on the other side .. I did lead her a merry chase.

I got pretty wet, but Dora was soaked.  All that Spaniel hair dripping .. I thought her Mum was really pleased.

Dora's Mum took her home.  I expect she was tired out with all that splashing about and the weight of all that wet hair.  Pointers have a lot more energy than that though ...

.... I was still running ...
